After serving 10 years on the Board of Alderman, now is the time to step up and move up to a position that needs the leadership I can bring. I bring a broad perspective on how City Government can work at its best, with my work with the National League of Cities(NLC) and the National Association of Latino Elected Officials(NALEO).

My vision for the City Clerk’s office is to make it the point of entry for your interactions with City Government. When I take office, your City Government experience will start with the City Clerk’s office. I am committed to changing the City Clerk’s position to one that engages the community, works in partnership with other branches of City Government and plays a leading role in educating our youth and citizens about civic involvement. The city deserves the best in terms of leadership in the City Clerk’s position that I will bring.

I plan on elevating the position to one where people know who their City Clerk is, not a position that is the best kept secret in the city.

Washington, D.C.

While on a whirlwind visit of Washington, D.C. this week I have been so fortunate to attend the inauguration of President Obama and also some of the formal inaugural celebrations. This has been a great honor and joy for both me and my lovely wife, Randi Rubin-Rodriguez. As always, I added some work-related travel in, and while in D.C.
I am meeting to finalize arangements for my return visit February 4, 2013 for an engagement with NLC. I have been asked to be a speaker and panelist for the National League of Cities (NLC) Institute for Youth, Education & Families. I have been selected to help facilitate a dialogue entitled “Local Elected Officials Offer Perspective on Needed Leadership for Young Men of Color”. This is a discussion I have been chosen for because I am the Immediate Past President of Hispanic Elected Local Officials (HELO) and also as recognition for work I have done here in Ward 26, New Haven (I am so proud of that!). My return trip in February will be all work and I will give a full report. For now, it has been a wonderful trip here in D.C. and I will share more upon my return to New Haven.

Tel Aviv morning rush hour

On November 28th I traveled to Israel with 19 legislators selected from North and South America.  This is my first trip to the Holy land and I am very excited. I am working on reporting on this trip through this blog site.  The flight over was extremely long and tiring.  We left JFK at 9:00 pm and arrived in Tel Aviv Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 pm.  We were met by our guide Ariel Stolar and drove into Tel Aviv and were registered at the Carlton Arms Hotel on the Mediterranean Shore. We were given our itinerary which was packed with things to do.  In fact we were told that ADL stands for” all day long”. That evening with very little rest and still jet lagged we went to dinner and met with Henrique Cymerman, Senior Jounalist Antenna 3, Spanish TV and Channel 2. The dialogue this evening focused in on media impact on the Israeli conflict and its position in the middle east.   There are over 1500 national media correspondents in Israel, slightly less than those covering the US.  The condition in Israel is very complex and difficult to resolve basically because the parties do not talk to each other and when they do they cannot reach a compromise or consensus on an agreement.  This was a theme throughout the trip.  The next day we had breakfast with local rabbis who continued the discussion regarding the strong feelings produced by the lack of progress.  There was some discussion regarding the Orthodox community and it’s lack of acceptance of the Reform traditions and position within the religious community.  Added is the issue of a lack of constitution for the country as one Israels internal issues. This was an excellent presentation that laid the foundation for our visit to the Supreme Court in Jerusalem.

I think you are the best citizens in the city and I am so proud and thankful I’ve had an opportunity to serve you. I look forward to working hard again on your behalf.
